Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a beloved local radio disc jockey and mother of two, was killed as she celebrated the Chief’s 2024 Super Bowl win with family, including her son, who was also wounded when gunfire broke out shortly after the victory parade in Kansas City.
Lopez-Galvan, who went by “Lisa G” on air, began co-hosting “Taste of Tejano” alongside Tommy Andrade in March 2022, according to her profile on the webpage for KKFI 90.1 FM. In a recent social media post seen by NBC 6, her collaborator revealed his final words to Lopez-Galvan: “Be careful and have fun! I’ll see you next Tuesday!”
Instead, Lopez-Galvan was fatally shot Wednesday during a rally to celebrate her Kansas City Chiefs, the reigning Super Bowl champions. She was among thousand of sports fans and football lovers present when gunfire erupted around 2 p.m. local time near the Union Station parking garage. More than 800 police officers were in the area at the time, some of them perched on rooftops, to provide security for the day’s festivities.
At least 21 people, including 11 children between the ages of 6 and 15, were wounded in the gunfire, police said. Lopez-Galvan’s son, an obsessive Chief’s fan, was also struck in the violent chaos. His condition was not clear as of Thursday.
While authorities have not yet identified any of the victims, friends told the Kansas City Star Lopez-Galvan was killed in the shooting. Her employer, KKFI 90.1 FM, also confirmed she was fatally struck in the gunfire.
“It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family,” the statement read. “This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community.”
Her show, “Taste of Tejano,” ran from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and typically featured Spanish-language tunes. According to her radio show bio, Lopez-Galvan truly believed that “music is life and a source of happiness.”
She also worked for years as a private DJ, often entertaining bilingual crowds.
“She was the most wonderful, beautiful person,” Lisa Lopez, a friend for decades with no relation to Lopez-Galan, told the Star. “She was a local DJ. She did everybody’s weddings. We all know her. She was so full of life.”
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said at a news conference Wednesday evening that three people had been taken into custody and firearms were recovered. They have not been identified.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. A motive for the violence remained unclear Thursday afternoon, with Graves emphasizing authorities are still working to piece together what happened.
